What Is the Beep Test?

The beep test (also called the 20m multi-stage fitness test or PACER) is a continuous shuttle run. You run 20 meters, touch the line, turn, and run back, in time with a beep that speeds up every minute or so. There's no rest built in. You keep going until you can't reach the line in time twice in a row, and your score is the level and shuttle you reached.

It's built to measure how much oxygen your body can use during steady, ongoing effort: your aerobic capacity. That's why it's the standard fitness check in schools, and in police and military recruitment worldwide.

What Is the Yo-Yo Intermittent Recovery Test?

The Yo-Yo Intermittent Recovery Test was developed by Danish sports scientist Jens Bangsbo to measure something the beep test doesn't: how well you recover between hard efforts, rather than how long you can sustain one. It comes in two versions. Yo-Yo IR1 starts at 10 km/h and suits general fitness testing and sub-elite athletes. Yo-Yo IR2 starts faster, at 13 km/h, and leans harder on your anaerobic system. It's built for elite and professional players.

Instead of one 20m shuttle at a time, you run 2 x 20m (out and back), then get a 10-second active recovery, jogging around a cone 5 meters behind the start line before the next pair of shuttles begins. Speed increases as the test goes on, the same way it does in the beep test, but that 10-second break is what separates the two tests. It's long enough to matter, and short enough that it never lets you fully recover.

Scoring works differently too. There's no level-and-shuttle number. You get a total distance covered (shuttles completed x 40 meters, since each rep is 20m there and 20m back), and that distance converts to an estimated VO₂ max with its own formula, separate from the one used for the beep test.

Which Test Should You Use?

Match your test to the demand of your sport, not the other way round. If your sport is mostly steady-state (distance running, cycling, rowing) or you just want a general aerobic fitness check, the beep test is the simpler tool and the one most benchmarks (school, police, military) are built around.

If your sport is stop-start (sprint, jog, sprint again, with short recoveries scattered through a match), the Yo-Yo test measures something closer to what you actually do on the pitch. That's why football clubs lean on it for pre-season fitness testing: repeated high-intensity running with partial recovery is exactly what a 90-minute match demands, and the beep test's steady pace doesn't capture that.

If you're coaching a mixed group and need one test for everyone, the beep test is easier to run: no cones for the recovery zone, no separate recovery-jog instruction to explain, and audio tracks for it are everywhere.

Why Scores Don't Convert Between the Two

You can't take a Yo-Yo distance and translate it into a beep test level, or the other way round, because the tests stress different systems. The beep test result mostly reflects your aerobic engine: how much oxygen you can use running continuously. The Yo-Yo result reflects that plus your ability to buffer and recover from short, hard efforts, which draws more on the anaerobic side, especially in IR2. Two people with an identical beep test level can post very different Yo-Yo distances depending on how well they recover between reps. Treat them as separate measurements, not two units on the same scale.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Yo-Yo test harder than the beep test?

For a trained athlete, usually yes. The Yo-Yo test's active recovery lets you push closer to your anaerobic limit each shuttle, since you get a short break to partially recover before the next one. The beep test is continuous, so pacing matters more and you rarely hit the same top-end intensity.

Can I do the Yo-Yo test at home?

You need a 20-meter space plus 5 meters behind the start line for the recovery jog, and an audio track that plays the Yo-Yo's specific beep-and-recovery pattern (2 x 20m runs, then a 10-second gap). That's a different track from a standard beep test recording. A flat driveway or a park works for the space; the audio is the harder part to source for free.

Which sports use the Yo-Yo test over the beep test?

Football (soccer) is the big one: most professional and academy clubs use Yo-Yo testing, not the continuous beep test, because match play is stop-start rather than steady running. Rugby and other field sports with a similar work-rest pattern use it too. The beep test remains more common in schools, police and military fitness checks, and general fitness testing.

What's a good Yo-Yo IR1 score?

It depends heavily on age, training status, and sport, so there is no single "good" number worth quoting here. A recreational adult and a professional footballer are not on the same scale. Compare your distance against normative data for your specific sport and level rather than a generic benchmark.
