How VO₂ Max is Calculated

VO₂ max (maximal oxygen uptake) measures how much oxygen your body can use during intense exercise — the higher it is, the faster you can run before hitting your limit. The beep test estimates it from the running speed of the last level you completed. This calculator uses the Léger et al. (1988) equation for adults:

VO₂max = −27.4 + 6.0 × V

Where V is the running speed in km/h at the highest level you completed. For example, finishing Level 8 (12.0 km/h) gives:

−27.4 + 6.0 × 12.0 = 44.6 ml/kg/min

Where that constant comes from. It comes from Léger, Mercier, Gadoury and Lambert (1988). That paper gives an age-dependent equation, VO₂max = 31.025 + 3.238V − 3.248A + 0.1536AV, and says that for adults you hold age at 18. Work that through and you get −27.439 + 6.003 × V, which rounds to −27.4 + 6.0 × V. That is the form Léger and Gadoury published in 1989, and the one the app and the levels chart use. Some other calculators print −24.4 + 6.0 × V instead, which reads about 3 ml/kg/min higher at every speed, so expect their number to be a little bigger than ours. Read the number as a tracking tool rather than a measurement: a shuttle run estimates VO₂ max, and even the correctly collapsed equation carries several points of error.

Fitness ratings compare your result against ACSM normative data, which varies by age group (20–29, 30–39, 40–49, 50–59, 60+) and sex. Note that norms for the 60+ group show aerobic capacity can be maintained well into older age with regular training. Enter your profile above for an accurate, personalized rating.

Your VO₂ max sets a ceiling for how fast you can run sustainably. To raise it, the most effective method is high-intensity interval training — sessions at or slightly above your current beep test level pace. Even a 5% improvement in VO₂ max typically translates to 1–2 full levels on the beep test.
