What's on the recordings
Both files are our own recording, not a rip of someone else's tape. The beeps are synthesized from the published shuttle-run speed table, so every interval lines up with the level it belongs to. A spoken voice calls out each new level as you reach it, which is useful if you're running the test alone and can't glance at a screen mid-shuttle.
The full test starts with a 5-second spoken countdown, then the first beep. From there it runs straight through all 20 levels without any pauses, so once you press play you don't need to touch your phone again until you're done.
How to use the audio
Turn your speaker volume most of the way up before you start. You need to hear the beep clearly from 20 meters away, over your own breathing. A Bluetooth speaker works better than a phone speaker for anything past a one-person test.
For the full 20m test, mark two lines exactly 20 meters apart on a flat, non-slip surface. Stand behind one line, press play, and run to the opposite line each time you hear a beep. Miss the line twice in a row and the test is over. That's your score.
If you'd rather skip the download and let a browser handle the scoring for you, the interactive beep test plays the same audio and tracks your level, shuttle count, and VO₂ max automatically as you run.
Can I use this to practice for the PACER test?
Yes. PACER is the name used for the 20-meter shuttle run in US schools, and it follows the exact same protocol as the beep test: same speeds, same 20 levels, same shuttle distances. The full 20m recording on this page will get you through the same test.
One thing to be clear about: this is not the official Cooper Institute FitnessGram recording. It's our own audio built from the published speed table, meant for practice, not for an official school assessment. See the PACER test guide for the FitnessGram Healthy Fitness Zone standards schools actually use.
Why this is free
Most beep test MP3s online sit behind an email signup form or a page full of ads before you get to the download link. There's no signup form here. The download button is the whole flow. No ads run on this page, and the files aren't watermarked with a voiceover trying to sell you an app.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the beep test audio really free?
Yes. Both files are free to download with no email signup or account, and no watermark. Right-click (or tap and hold) the download button and save the file to your device.
Can I use this on my phone?
Yes. Both MP3 files play on any phone, tablet, or computer. For a group test, connect your phone to a Bluetooth speaker so everyone on the course can hear the beeps clearly.
Does the audio include spoken level announcements?
Yes. Both recordings call out the level number as you move up, along with the beeps themselves, so you always know where you are in the test without checking a screen.
Can I use this to practice for the PACER test?
Yes. The full 20-meter recording follows the same protocol as the PACER test: same speeds, same 20 levels, same shuttle count. It is not the official Cooper Institute recording, but the timing matches.
How accurate is the timing on the recordings?
The beep timing follows the published Léger et al. (1988) shuttle-run protocol (the running speed table used by the beep test and PACER test) down to the level. Each shuttle interval was generated from that speed table rather than sampled by ear.
