Terms of Use

The rules for using this site, and what you should know before you run the test.

Last updated October 14, 2026

About these terms

These terms apply to your use of beeptest.net, including the beep test app, the calculators, the guides and the audio files. The site is run by Tim Murphy, a sole trader based in Australia. In these terms, "we" and "us" mean Tim Murphy.

By using the site you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, please do not use it. Our privacy policy explains how we handle data.

The service

The site is free to use and needs no account. We provide it "as is" and "as available". We may change, pause or remove any part of it at any time without notice.

We do not promise that the site will always be available, free of errors or work on every device. Your device, browser, speaker and settings can all affect the audio and its timing. Check that the beeps play clearly and on time before you rely on them for a test.

Health and safety

The beep test is a maximal exercise test. It keeps getting faster until you cannot keep up, so it pushes your heart and lungs as hard as they can go.

This site does not give medical advice. Everything here is general information. It does not replace advice from a doctor or another qualified health professional who knows your situation.

Talk to a doctor before you start if you have any heart, lung or other medical condition, are pregnant, are coming back from an injury or illness, or are not sure the test is safe for you. A pre-exercise screening questionnaire such as the PAR-Q+ can help you decide whether to get advice first. Our guide on how to do the beep test covers screening and setup in more detail.

Stop straight away if you feel chest pain, dizziness or faintness, severe breathlessness, or unwell in any way. Do not push on for one more shuttle. Get medical help if the symptoms do not settle quickly.

Choose a safe place to run. Use a flat, non-slip surface with enough room past each line to slow down and turn, away from traffic, walls and other obstacles. Warm up first and wear shoes with good grip.

Children and young people should only do the test with a qualified adult supervising, such as a PE teacher or coach. If you run the test for a group, such as a class or a team, you are responsible for screening, supervising and keeping that session safe.

You take part at your own risk. You decide whether the test is right for you, and you are responsible for how you use it, subject to the rights described in limitation of liability below.

How accurate the results and information are

VO₂ max figures on this site are estimates worked out from a published formula. Fitness ratings and norms are general reference bands from published sources. None of them is a clinical measurement or a diagnosis.

Police, military, fire service and sports standards come from third parties. They change, and they differ between organisations, countries and roles. We cite sources where we can and try to keep the figures current, but we cannot promise they are complete or up to date. Always confirm the current standard with the recruiting organisation before you rely on it.

beeptest.net is an independent site. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to any police force, military or defence body, fire and rescue service, or The Cooper Institute (which publishes FitnessGram and the PACER test). PACER® and FitnessGram® are registered trademarks of The Cooper Institute.

Intellectual property

The site's text, design, code and audio recordings belong to us or the people we license them from. You may use the site, and download the audio files to run the test for yourself or for a group you train, teach or coach. You may not sell the audio or content, pass it off as your own, or republish it without our written permission. Quoting a short passage with a link back to the page is fine.

Other names and logos mentioned on the site, including PACER® and FitnessGram®, belong to their owners.

Acceptable use

When you use the site, you agree not to:

  • break any law or anyone else's rights
  • try to get unauthorised access to the site or the systems that run it
  • disrupt the site, overload it, or upload or send anything harmful such as malware
  • copy the site in bulk with automated tools in a way that puts load on it
  • present results or content from the site as official, or as endorsed by any organisation named on it

Links to other sites

The site links to other websites, such as official sources for fitness standards. We do not control those sites and are not responsible for their content or how they handle your data.

Limitation of liability

Your legal rights come first. Nothing in these terms excludes, restricts or changes any consumer guarantee, right or remedy you have under the Australian Consumer Law, or any other right that the law says cannot be excluded or limited. The same applies to rights you have under the laws of your own country that cannot be excluded or limited by a contract. Nothing in these terms limits liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud, where the law does not allow that.

Subject to that, and to the fullest extent the law allows:

  • we give no warranties or promises about the site, its results or its information beyond those set out in these terms
  • we are not liable for any indirect or consequential loss, or for loss of data, opportunity or profit, such as missing out on a job or place because of a result or standard shown on the site
  • we are not liable for injury, illness or other harm that comes from taking part in exercise you chose to do using the site
  • where the law lets us limit our liability but not exclude it, our liability is limited to supplying the relevant service again

Changes to these terms

We may update these terms from time to time. When we do, we will change the date at the top of this page. If you keep using the site after a change, the updated terms apply.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws in force in Australia, and the courts of Australia can hear any dispute about them. If you are a consumer living in another country, you also keep the protection of that country's mandatory consumer laws and any right to bring a claim in your local courts.

If a court decides that part of these terms cannot be enforced, the rest of the terms still apply.
